  • FreeHand: sold and buried alive
    Many designers worldwide do their best work with the software application known simply as FreeHand (version 1.0 was first released in 1987). They count on it for their livelihoods and object to industry efforts to limit their choices. For many designers and illustrators, the software options forced upon them prove inferior in practice. Despite this fact, in 2005 FreeHand, as part of a larger transaction, was sold to another corporation which callously and summarily announced FreeHand's death, much to the dismay of those who rely on it to practice their trade. No coincidence that this same corporation owns another vector graphics application. FreeHand was, at the time of its purchase and sudden execution, the only superior product and true competition at hand.

    FreeHand must live
    But now there is meaningful resistance, initiated by the designer and illustrator Thü Hürlimann, known in german speaking countries for his work as the former art director of Macworld and Computerworld Switzerland. In 2009 he came together with a U.S. design firm, specifically Jabez Palmer of Bez Design in Seattle, to found the FreeFreeHand Organization. Within days of launching their activist web site, more than a thousand FreeHand users joined the community in full support. The number of members continues to grow daily.

    Mit dem Vektorgrafikprogramm FreeHand arbeiten viele weltweit renommierte Designer, seit es 1987 in der Version 1.0 von Aldus veröffentlicht wurde. Viele schwören darauf und möchten nicht gezwungen werden, auf ein anderes, minderwertigeres Programm umsteigen zu müssen, denn 2005 ging FreeHand als Teil eines grösseren Deals an einen neuen Besitzer, welcher die Weiterentwicklung des Programms sofort einstellte – kein Zufall, wo doch ebenjene Firma selbst ein Vektorgrafikprogramm im Angebot hat, zu dem FreeHand ein – wie viele meinen – überlegenes Konkurrenzprodukt darstellte.

    FreeHand soll leben
    Doch nun formiert sich Widerstand, initiiert durch den im deutschen Sprachraum bekannten Illustrator und Grafiker Thü Hürlimann, ehemaliger Art Director von Macworld und Computerworld Schweiz. Er hat sich mit einer Gruppe von Designern, darunter Jabez Palmer von Bez Design in Seattle, zusammengesetzt und die Organisation FreeFreeHand ins Leben gerufen. Bereits mehr als 1.400 Anwender haben sich als Mitglieder eingetragen. Sie alle möchten, dass die Entwicklung von FreeHand weitergeht.

Pero en 2005, Freehand, como parte de una negociación mayor, fue vendido a otra empresa, la cual desde entonces simplemente lo ha enterrado. No es coincidencia que la misma empresa posea otra aplicación gráfica para la cual Freehand era el único competidor superior.

    Freehand debe vivir
    Pero ahora surge la resistencia, iniciada por el diseñador e ilustrador Thü Hürlimann, conocido en países de habla alemana por su trabajo como antiguo director de arte de MacWorld y ComputerWorld de Suiza. En 2009 se unió a un grupo de diseñadores llamado Jabez Palmer von Bez Design en Seattle, para fundar la Organización FreeFreehand (LiberadFreehand).     Wielu projektantów na całym świecie wykonuje swoja znakomitą robotę z użyciem programu znanego jako Freehand (wersja 1.0 została opublikowana w roku 1987). W istocie znajomość tego programu umożliwia im zarabianie na życie i w tej sytuacji naturalny jest protest przeciwko ograniczaniu ich wolności w kwestii doboru oprogramowania. Dla wielu projektantów i ilustratorów wymuszenie na nich, aby używali innych opcji programowych, niż te, które stanowiły dla nich oczywisty wybór, stało się w praktyce „prawdziwym piekłem”. Bez względu na ich preferencje, w roku 2005, jako część większej transakcji, Freehand został sprzedany innej korporacji, co w rezultacie oznaczało bezlitosne skazanie tej aplikacji na likwidacje, ku przerażeniu tych, dla których stanowiła ona podstawę pracy zawodowej.
